Imagination
How Many Magical Creatures Do You Create In A Day?
It’s the start of another week in March! I’ve been pondering imagination and creativity quite a bit lately and how it impacts our day-to-day. I feel a deep dive coming, but for now I’ll keep it simple.
If you have kids, know kids, have ever seen or heard kids play (this should be almost everyone) you know how easy it is for them to slip in and out of imaginative play all throughout the day. My older daughter, Reagan, is very creative and imaginative, but it’s changed from when she was younger. She will still play with her younger sister and is great at imagining things. In her own creative time she’s an artist and a storyteller—she always has been but her stories have changed and evolved with her as they should. My younger daughter, Hollyn, is 6 and her easy child-like imagination is in full swing. Recently she had been creating magical and non-magical creatures simply with her hands and nothing else because what else could you possibly need to create creatures out of thin air? ;) They were her personal entourage and went everywhere with her for about a week. She named many of them until there got to be too many. She even made some for others: I received a baby dragon named Honey.
As a fantasy writer, of course, I loved this game—although to her, it was more than a game, in those moments they were as if real (there’s something important there). My husband thought it was pretty fun too and brought her on as his special guest on his podcast one day and she shared all about it. It was pretty cute to hear her sweet 6 year old voice confidently sharing about her creations. I was encouraged and inspired… inspired enough to share this with you.
It’s pretty short if you want to listen in (it’s also on Spotify and wherever you listen to podcasts). It’s The Steven James Wylie Show by
(also on Substack).I hope enjoy it and maybe create a creature of your own today. You never know what magic it could spark in your day. If you do, I’d love to hear about it below (or hit reply in the email).
